About Walkup Skydome
There have been 5 Big Sky basketball tournaments (mens) held there – 1987, ’97, ’98, 2005, ’06. In its first 6 years it was the biggest timber dome in the world, until it was completed in 1983 in Tacoma. The wood in its construction was made out of Southern Yellow Pine.

Other two were the Holt Arena in Idaho State (Mini-dome of Pocatello in 1970) and another in 1975 named the Kibbie Dome (also at Idaho but in Moscow). Aside from sporting events this arena gets used for concerts, graduations, conventions, trade shows and various other events. Its floor consists of 97,000 square feet of space. This is where the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL hold their summer training camps.

There are plenty of great hotels with excellent rates in the surrounding areas, mainly on the west-southwest side of the NAU campus close to Interstate 17. Places like Quality Inn, Baymont Inn and Suites Flagstaff and Hilton Garden Inn are located there. There are plenty of activities to do in the surrounding areas of Flagstaff, like visiting the Walnut Canyon National Monument. It is beautiful and very interesting. There are hiking trails and tours to take.

For those who like a little more excitement there are Arizona raft adventures. Rafting and tubing are a big deal in Flagstaff. One of their Hatch River Expeditions will leave you breathless. Who doesn’t dream of a Grand Canyon Adventure? You can take day tours to one of the seven wonders of the world while you visit Flagstaff to take in the Walkup Skydome. There are plenty of nature and wildlife tours all around the area, so you will have lots of options for where you go and what you see.
