Wales Airport (WAA) is located in Wales, Alaska in the Nome, Alaska Census area. The airport has one run way that services Bering Air and Era Alaska which both travel to Nome. Wales itself is in the westernmost area of the state in the Bering Strait region.

About Wales Airport
Only about 162 people live in Wales today at one time it was populated with more than 500 people. In the early 1900’s a flu epidemic destroyed the majority of the population.

Things to do in Wales
The placement of Wales on the Bering Sea leaves a lot of opportunity for water centered activities. Anything from swimming, fishing, kayaking, and skiing can be enjoyed in the area. Nome, Alaska can be accessed by charter. In Nome there are many activities including the Carrie M McLain Memorial Museum, the Iditarod Sled Dog Race or the Iron Dog Snowmobile Race, and the World’s Largest Gold Pan. Ice Gold and wilderness expeditions are some other fun activities that visitors usually enjoy.

Hotels near WAA
Wales does not get a lot of long term visitors. For this reason there won’t be any restaurants or accommodations unless you are visiting friends or relatives in the area. In Nome you will find a couple of places to eat and sleep. Nome has a Subways, Airport Pizza, Milano’s, and Polar Café. Subway is an American sandwich chain that serves several different types of sub sandwiches.

Milanos and Airport Pizza both serve pizzas and other Italian based foods like spaghetti. If you want a taste of Alaskan beer Breakers Bar or Gold Dust Lounge are your best bets. Many of the plaes that provide accommodations will have less than 100 rooms. For the most part in Nome you will have more than a couple of places to choose from. The Polaris Hotel, Aurora Inn, Nugget Inn, Bed for a night, Being Sea Bed & Breakfast, Mai’s Guest house, and Sweet Dreams B & B are some of the choices that are available in Nome.
