Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport abbreviated VRA is located 14.6 miles (23.5 km) from Mantazas, Cuba and 21.7 miles (34.9 km) from Varadero, Cuba. It handles more than 1 million passengers each year. Next to Jose Marti International Airport in Havana, VRA is the second busiest airport in the country.
Trips to town will require some means of transportation. Double-decker open top buses run regularly from Blau Marina Hotel and Princess del Mar to town. The buses make stops along the way at many restaurants and shopping malls. There are taxis; all of the hotels will have a location were taxis can pick you up. Some of the more exclusive hotels will have car rental on sight. Coco Taxi, motorized enclosed trikes are also a popular means of travel for sightseeing or just going shopping in town. For a more romantic experience a horse-drawn carriage are available for hire.
 

About Varadero Airport
VRA replaced what is now known as Kawama airport in 1989 and was named after civil rights activist Juan Gualberto Gomez. Gomez fought for Cuban and African American Rights in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Varadero itself is situated on the Caribbean and it is considered a resort town.

Things to do in Varadero
Go to the Parque Josone to enjoy the birds, music, vendors, and camel rides for the kids. There are wonderful botanical gardens, flamingos and parrot, lakes and bridges. See the dolphin show at Delfinario, you can swim with the dolphins. Viist Seafari Cayo Blanco which has everything from snorkeling in a coral barrier reef to music and entertainment. Spend the day here enjoying the open bar. Te Seafari Cayo Blanca is an excursion by Catamaran.

Explore the Bellamar Caves. Be prepared it’s a little damp and warm. Play a round of golf at Villa Du Pont. Then have dinner in the basement at La Americas (see below) and stay the night (see below). Shop at the International Shopping Center or with the beach vendors. Currency is equal to USD.

Restaurants near VRA
Las Americas is the most expensive and luxurious restaurant in Varadero. The floors are marble and its decorated with bronze candelabras and oil paintings. If you visit Varadero, many of the packages are all inclusive but if you decide to venture out you can find many restaurants at the Marina or the shopping center.

Varadero Hotels
At Villa Du Pont there are only 5 guest rooms plus a presidential seat. If you are lucky enough to book one of these rooms you will be lavished in the lap of luxury all night. There is a 24 hour bar on the second floor called the Mirador.

Sandals is very famous in the Caribbean in Varadero they operate the Royal Hicacos Resort & Spa. Its and adult only location and it sits on the beach. Hotel Barcelo is another resort location with all inclusive packages. There are buffets for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; 9 bars; snacks; 2 formal dinners to choose from each night; children’s play grounds; and lots of family activities to choose from.
