In fact, in 2013 it was ranked as the 5th best public university in the country. The university is also known for its athletic prowess, and the Tar Heels are known by their distinctive baby blue and white colors. As of fall 2011, the university had won 40 national championships in six different sports, making it the 8th all-time most winning program in the country.
