About San Jose Airport The airport is given after well-known Juan Santamaria who joined the Costa Rican army as a drummer boy after William Walker tried to overthrow the Costa Rican government. The Costa Rican President at the time called for the general population to take u arms to protect the nation. The historical account is that after several members of the Costa Rican army failed to set fire to and enemy hostel Santamaria volunteered with the condition that if he died someone would look after his single unwed mother. Santamaria was successful but he did perish and his victory is celebrated on April 11th as Juan Santamaria Day. San Jose itself is a plateau that sits at an elevation of 3,700 feet.
