Things to do in Reading
The newly opened Goggle Works Center for the Arts displays frequent exhibitions; hold art classes, and shows independent films. The building was an old goggle factory during WWII. At the reading museum there is a planetarium, mummies, and a beautiful botanical garden. Mount Penn is home to many attractions like the Japanese style pagoda built in 1908, the William Penn Memorial Fire Tower (1939), and he Reading Glove and Mitten Manufacturing Company (1899).

There are many festivals held throughout the year. Festivals always mean really good food, fun activities, and great music. Festivals include Oktoberfest, Berks Jazz Fest usually includes some well known artists, the Apple Dumpling festival and pageant includes a craft show, Shocktober fest is held by the Haunted Screen Park that has 4 haunted attractions, the Cherry Blossom Festival to celebrate Cherry Blossom season in Japan, the Kutztown Folk Festival to celebrate the Pennsylvania Dutch. The Oley Valley Community Fair is an old fashion county fair.The Duryea HillClimb is a biannual race held since 1951. There’s also an Earth Day festival.

Most of the great food venues can be found in downtown Reading. One of the oldest is the Jimmy Kramer’s Peanut bar were its customary to throw your peanut shells on the floor. Jimmy Kramer’s has been around for 100 years. If you would rather something more upscale Judy’s on Cherry is your best option. Judy’s frequently has special events like Meet the Artists or Jazz fest. Dinners include Hearth-fired pizzas, salads, pastas, and great seafood, chicken, or steak dishes. Hell’s Kitchen Contestant Andrea Heinly runs the kitchen at the Stokesay Castle. The castle has some of the finest dining options in reading.

There are many chain hotels available in and around downtown most located on Papermill Rd (Homewood suites, Crowne Plaza, and the Reading Crowne). One of the nicest places to stay is at the Abraham Lincoln a Wyndham Historic Hotel. It is listed on the National Register of historic places. It has two restaurants, a fitness center, and shuttle service. This hotel is famous because John Phillip Sousa legendary bandmaster died in the hotel in 1932.
