The Kumamoto Airport is an international airport located in Mashiki, Kumamoto, Japan on the southernmost of the four main islands of Japan. The airport is also commonly known as the Aso Kumamoto Airport and was originally opened in 1960.
Reservations are required and the company offers per vehicle rates. Public transportation is available at the airport in the form of a bus. Numerous local hotels within easy reach of the Kumamoto offer shuttle service to and from the airport terminal. The traveler is encouraged to contact their hotel/resort to determine shuttle availability. The standard compliment of rental cars and taxis are also available at either terminal if transportation is not prearranged or if plans change during your flight.

The airport’s assigned IATA code is KMJ. The airport is less than 10 miles from the heart of the city. KMJ serves as a feeder into Japan’s other major international airports in Osaka and Tokyo and has international flights to South Korea and Okinawa. The Kumamoto Airport handles nearly 3 million passengers annually and is the 11th busiest airport in Japan (by passenger volume). The airport also provides service for numerous charter and cargo carriers in addition to the passenger traffic.

The Kumamoto Airport uses 2 terminals to service its passenger flights. Domestic flights go through the larger terminal and international flights through the other terminal. Each terminal is equipped with VIP and business lounges as well as comfortable waiting areas equipped with all the amenities frequent travelers are familiar with. The airport offers Wi-Fi service and standard ground transportation options are available.
