Indiana University, Bloomington is conveniently located just a little bit south of Indianapolis. Rural getaways and urban action are all available with very minimal travel. Though you may not care what there is to do in the surrounding area once you see what the campus is like. | |
There are taxi-cabs, rental cars, and shuttle buses. Alamo, Avis, and Budget are just three of the companies located directly inside the airport for customer convenience. You can call ahead or rent on spot at the airport though it is suggested that you do call ahead. Keep in mind age restrictions and other policies that apply to renting vehicles. Choosing a cab should be no problem. They are just outside the airport in a designated area. You can always call a company in advance to ensure that you have a ride when you get off of the plane instead of possibly having to wait for one. Every cab ride from the airport is at least fifteen dollars regardless of where you are going. There are two shuttle bus providers, Star of America and Bloomington Shuttle Service. You must call ahead of time to ensure a seat and space for luggage. Indianapolis International Bloomington Shuttle Service, Inc. makes nine trips between the campus and the airport every day. The shuttle stops at 4 locations around campus and 2 locations downtown. Tickets can be bought from the kiosk at the stops or reserved online ahead of time for a small discount. Once the shuttle leaves Bloomington it takes just over an hour to get to the airport. The Star of America shuttle service makes five stops on campus before heading to the airport. They too make nine runs a day and offer online reservations for a discount. Indiana University, Bloomington Over 40,000 students attend Indiana University, giving life to the school’s great traditions. The Little 500 has drawn the most attention, as well as raising money for student scholarships. This event is a bicycle race held every April and has been attended by celebrities like John Mellencamp and Barack Obama. Lance Armstrong called it the coolest event he ever attended. Named as one of the nation’s top ten sports schools, they are part of the infamous Big Ten division. Indiana University is a resource of an amazing selection of recreational activities as well as sports at the college level. Every year the school hosts a bicycling event called The Little 500 to raise money for scholarships. The event is known for bringing in famous faces including the great Lance Armstrong. The scholarships help to provide access to deserving students who otherwise would be unable to attend which drives the schools rather high acceptance rate at an impressive 72 percent. The school’s graduation rate is equally impressive maintaining over 90 percent in graduation rates for some time now. Things to do in Bloomington If you’re looking for shopping or entertainment you’ll be in for a treat with museums, art galleries, theatres, and festivals like The Lotus Music and Arts Festival. Go shopping at at Dope Couture or find crafts to do in your spare time at Yarns Unlimited. To go with the ideal college experience, Bloomington is the ideal college town. With a population of 70,000 residents, this may not be the largest city in the Midwest, but it is one of the area’s cultural centers. The small city has coffeehouses, open air markets, restaurants of all types, and over 30 festivals throughout the year. And live music can be found everywhere. The rolling hills surrounding the town are absolutely beautiful and offer the perfect weekend getaway for active outdoor enthusiasts. The hills hold the state’s largest and oldest winery, which you’ll surely want to visit. The hills are also home to the country’s only Tibetan cultural center. Lake Monroe and Griffy Lake are available for boating, kayaking, fishing and a host of other water sports. The Hoosier National Forest is just a short drive away, as all many other parks and trails.
