About Hollywood As the home of the entertainment industry, Hollywood has several historic movie studios. Due to the significant and historic role the neighborhood of Hollywood has played in the movie industry, the name "Hollywood" has been generally recognized as the official name of the United States’ movie industry. Its role in the movies has given it a cosmopolitan structure. The district has now become ethnically, economically and socially diversified. It is a highly populated and congested district. Even till the late 19th century, the neighborhood was still a small community; it only came into existence as a municipality in 1903. Seven years after its incorporation, the neighborhood was merged with Los Angeles City; this was when the movie industry began to gain prominence, which grew to the extent of dominating and controlling everything that has to do with motion pictures globally. Located on the North West region of the city of Los Angeles, Hollywood is bordered by Hollywood Hills on the north, on the northeast by Los Feliz, on the east by East Hollywood, on the south by Hancock Park and Larchmont, on the southwest by Fairfax and on the west by West Hollywood and on the northwest by Hollywood Hills West. The first ever celebrity community is located in the neighborhood of Hollywood. It was commission in 1918 by H. J. Whitley. Known as the Whitley Heights the Mediterranean-style village edifice was designed by architect A. S. Barnes and constructed on the elevated hills of Hollywood Boulevard. In the early 50s, one of the busiest freeways in the US, which is at the same time one of the principal freeways in Los Angeles was constructed. Known as the Hollywood Freeway, the bypass serves as the principal freeway over the Cahuenga Pass. The famous commercial and entertainment building lying in Hollywood Boulevard, which is known as Capitol Records Tower is located at 1750 Vine Street, Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The edifice was built in 1956. As a tribute to the stars of Hollywood and other significant contributing artists in the entertainment industry, the Hollywood Walk of Fame was instituted in 1958 but officially opened on the 8th of February 1960. |
