About Charles Village

It is located in the north-central area of Baltimore and encompasses the area immediately east and south of Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus.

In 1998 the residents of Charles Village were given the challenge to paint and renovate the fronts of their Victorian row houses and to use "uncommon colors." One of the special attractions of the area is the result: the lasting result of the contests and challenges for painting and renovation resulted in the "Painted Ladies," as the homes are known, which appear on travel guides and magazine covers. Within Charles Vilage is also the ever-popular Waverly Farmer’s Market.

As part of the process of redevelopment, a new Barnes and Noble bookstore opened in 2006 as an anchor for retail development in the area, and it occupies space on the first floor of the new dorm building called Charles Commons.

Charles Village Attractions
The Baltimore Museum of Art is one of the gems of the area: it houses over 90,000 works of art, and it offers absolutely free admission. Although the museum boasts of extensive exhibits of African, Asian, and Ancient American art, the most popular draws are the Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh, and Renoir works. Just within the museum is the restaurant called Gertrude’s, a name which references Gertrude Stein’s introduction of several artists to the area. Chef John Shield’s grandmother introduced him to both cooking and to Gertrude Stein as well.

Hotels in Charles Village
Hotels abound in Charles Village. The Doubletree Inn at the Colonnade is just across the street from the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. Also, the refurbished Lord Baltimore Hotel has been said to have "returned to its former elegance," including Baccarat ceiling chandeliers, 440 guest rooms, a bakery, and numerous public spaces, executive offices, and a ballroom. The Hotel Brexton, first opened in 1881, is a popular boutique hotel offering personal service and luxury. Within the seven-story building with lush Queen Anne décor, the hotel boasts of the "delight in the art of the individual."
